Alsharq Alawsat Newspaper published on Tuesday, 25/10/2011, Issue No. 12019, an article by Hussein Idrissi entitled:The High representative for AOC:The tension between Muslims and the West is fuelled by presupposed ideas

The second meeting of the Alliance of Civilizations (AOC) of the countries of the Organization of Islamic cooperation (OIC), held in the headquarter of the Organization of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in Rabat, submitted proposals that serve human coexistence and bridge the gap between cultures.

The participants in the meeting said that the Alliance of Civilizations appears to be significant « at a time in which the world is in desperate need to ignore all that can fuel hatred among human beings. Now, the need to avoid cultural differences and historical grudges are not led only by some associations here or there but there are thinkers and wise people who also call for Alliance of Civilizations, interfaith dialogue, and cultural integration ».

In this context, Jorge Sampaio, the High Representative for United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) (the former Portuguese President), said that «all the reports indicated the continuation of tension between Muslims and the West after ten years from the events of September 11.

This tension is fuelled by negative thoughts held by each party about the other». To sum up the situation Jorge Sampaio said that «many in the West see Muslims as fanatics and advocates of violence, while few of them see that they are tolerant and respectful to women.
on the other side, Muslims in the Middle East and Asia see that Western people are selfish, immoral, aggressive and advocates of intolerance».Jorge Sampaio suggested that the countries, due to meet in Rabat for preparing plans and national policies, should discuss the problem of this discouraging atmosphere that doesn’t promote mutual respect between peoples and civilizations, through their focus on education, youth, media and migration.
